About Us

HM Consulting and Son is an ethical consultancy firm designed to open up opportunities to engage with cutting-edge, impact-driven research. Our selected team of experts are here to support academics, universities and NGOs bid for and deliver research projects. Our approach is wholly inclusive, with the aim of bringing about positive social and economic change.

We supported The Open University to bid for research calls worth over £20M in 2017, plus, managed their 'Year of Mygration' initiative throughout 2018. We helped Cisco launch a project designed to empower 10,000 students by 2022 with digital skills and experiences to get jobs in the digital economy and currently support Ibba Girls' School in South Sudan with their fundraising, marketing and communications.

How did we get here?

HM Consulting and Son was founded in 2016. After joining the Higher Education sector back in 2011, Heidi McCafferty, its founder, saw the distinct inequities faced by many of those engaging in research.

Heidi met more and more academics and NGOs with hugely innovative, cutting-edge ideas, who lacked the institutional or organisational capacity, support or finance needed to translate these ideas in a way that ensured they could secure funding. Plus, many others struggling to deliver complex projects in tight time frames.

HM Consulting and Son was set up to provide a rapid response service for universities and charities to deliver projects ranging from fundraising to academic research to event planning.

Recent projects include coordinating a new OpenLearn course, ‘China in Africa’, supporting the University of Sussex to bid for funding from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and organising a series of events for Refugee Week in London, Belfast and Milton Keynes.
